I feed both alfala and hay - alternately. I also feed mixture of grain, steamed cracked corn, and a little bit of beet pulp. Bread that I get from the breadstore - a pickup load for about 15.00 - the little darlings kill for the bread. Somewhat of a treat as opposed to actually calling it feed.
I do find that the alfalfa(which they prefer) also ups the water consumption greatly. They all seem to be hail and hearty so guess they are doing all right with this diet.
