It is funny that you should post this. When we took our first buck to the Vet to get castrated and we did this only because he was too large to band, we had never banded before but were going to try it..luckely we did not.
My husband asked about banding dogs. He had heard of a few people doing this. The vet told him in no uncertain terms I have two words for you..Animal Abuse!! She also went on to say that she felt the same about people banding their livestock.
We choose to take our bucks to the vet. They charge like $5.00 and it is done correctly. The goats are not put under, but they spray them with something to numb the area. Also if there are any problems, they can be brought back to the vet. This did happen to us, the first buck we had castrated, he must have pulled a stitch on the way home in the back of the truck, we immediatly took him back, they restitched and kept him over night for observation, at no cost to us. Of course when we get them home they look at us like kinda pissed at us for a few days after the procedure but it is over, no dragging it out.
To us it is well worth the $5.00. I personally think after doing a little research that banding is indeed cruel. I know that a lot of people use this method, and I am not knocking them by any means at all (smile)..This is just my opinion.
