Feed should NEVER be moldy. Unless it's already below freezing there, it shouldn't be a solid block unless it's old. And if you could see some mold, there might be more that is still so small that you couldn't see it yet. I'd bring the lot back-I'd be afraid to feed it.
Now, to your question about how to keep the GOOD feed from clumping. I break it up with hay hooks crowbar, etc. Then I add regular oats and corn. So thrir feed isn't totally sweet feed-and the resulting mix never clumps.
