I am a Purina fan, here only the dog food is not Purina; it's a brand I do trust, they do a lot of research on nutrition. Now I feed Show chow for goats by Purina, and I am very pleased. It is a complete feed, so they don't need as much alfalfa hay as I used to give (and don't I hate to see so much hay wasted on the ground :( )
Just recently I went to a catle grazing seminar, and learned that Hay is the most expencive food we give to cattle. I also learned that when we are feeding a ruminant we need to feed, and worry about the bacterias in the rumen which there are two kind:Starch breakers
Fiber (celulose) breakers
The starch ones do survive in a more acid environment than the fiber ones, so in the competion the fiber breaker DO loose for the starch ones. And I can not remember why ( did not take much notes) but the amount of stach in your feed should never to be more than 3% of starch /1000lb body weight.
Also it is always better to give Whole grain, to minimize the growth of fungus (mold, aflotoxin, etc...)
