Hi all,
Well, I'm one of those "husbands" that is probably as guilty as the rest for buying my own present. But I trace it back to the days when I was a kid and my folks would ask that proverbial question, "whadya want for Christmas?" What I asked for was never what I received. And being the ungrateful little whelp I was, I'd cry and complain that I certainly didn't need another shirt, pack of socks or pair of pants.
Well, as I got older, I started realizing the importance of those clothes I got without asking and started asking for clothes. Now they get me everything but clothes!
But Pam and I have a different way of doing things I suppose. We look at it from a practical standpoint of "what we need" as opposed to "what we want". Sure, it does take the surprise out of it for the most part, but then there are always those little unexpected gifts that do generate the surprise. She never fails to surprise me nor I her with something that may have been mentioned casually in passing throughout the year. Those are the best surprises - to know that your loved one was listening and remembered even though you may have forgotten.
Best regards,
Gary
PS. Okay, I admit. I probably would have bought the guitar myself too. LOL
