300 animals seized in neglect case
Democrat and Chronicle
(Sunday, December 2, 2001) -- Investigators from 10 animal welfare organizations yesterday removed 250 to 300 animals from a Cayuga County property after the owner failed to comply with court orders to improve their living conditions. The process was expected to take at least 10 hours.
"This is huge," said Gretchen Wood, manager of community relations for the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm. "There are a wide variety of animals and a wide variety of conditions. It basically can be summed up as long-term neglect."
Among the animals at the property were 80 horses, 30 emus, 30 llamas, 30 fallow deer, 20 cats, 20 pigeons, 15 goats, 15 sheep, four dogs and one bull. Investigators from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Rhode Island Potter League for Animals were invited to help "because this was beyond the scope" of Cayuga County officials, Wood said.
The owners of the property, Richard and Pat Gilfus, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
