Hi Kari,
Thank you. Actually I do have a pretty good idea where it is coming from but it would not be right to mention names. Hard to prove in many ways and could be costly to pursue. Let's just put it this way, a large increase in this kind of malicious activity started right after going to the $6.00 fee.
It was a difficult decision to go to a paid system but I really felt it necessary - and as things have turned out, I was right about some of the people that once frequented the Message Forum and no longer do. Like you said, $6.00 isn't really that much and I had always intended to use that money for the site anyway - not as a get rich quick scheme. Hopefully the word will spread that the Message Forum here is a pretty tight knit community of friends you can trust and count on and it will bring others to join.
I had several people write to me about all of this, and I was even sent some comments on what people were saying. Most of them could not understand that a web site could cost any money to run at all. I mean I hate splitting hairs but no matter what kind of web site a person goes to, free or paid, someone or some company is paying for it. In this case it just happened to be me and not that I minded so much. just wanted more people to feel that this is "their" site. Just as it's really not right to give a pet away for free. Charge somebody $6.00 for that pet and they will most probably take better care of it in the longrun.
That is the point that I have been trying to impress upon EVERYONE in the goat community for some time. When we the people in the goat industry use other free web sites that are supported by "non-goat" related products and services, we are not doing the goat industry or community any justice. I'm just trying to build our goat community based upon the support from within the goat community and not outside influences.
A simple example before I go is that a few years back, Mitsubishi (the car division) came under alot of fire for supporting the destruction of rain forests in South America. Alot of people got on the bandwagon to not buy Mitsubishi products. Here's a company that you would not even think about outside the realm of cars that has influence in other areas besides cars. Ever since then I have always been wary of what type of support and endorsements I will make - even to the point of not wearing a particular company's t-shirt if I know they have a wrongful influence.
Using the "non-goat" related sites as such is just one of those things that certainly defines all that for me even moreso. Heck, who knows, maybe I'm just getting that much more crotchety with age LOL. Thanks for writing.
Best regards,
Gary Pfalzbot
