Lila:

We had a huge problem w/Cocci this past spring and summer. Nick had it so bad that we had to take him to the vet to spend 2 days and they hydrated him and put on the Albon. We had a problem with it with our other goats too but not as bad as Nick had it. I was just about to give up let me tell you, we were so worried!!

Ok, this is what I have learned, and I hope it helps you. First of all, putting the Cocci treatment in the water, I am not so crazy about that because you are not sure that each goat is getting the dosage they require. My opinion would be, call your vet and see if they either have a sulfa drug or a bottle of Albon, (Albon is very expensive, but you cannot wait at this point for any shipments from Jeffers etc to come in). Dose them accordingly for 5 days, doubling up on the first dose.

I think if you were putting the prevention in the water as a prevention that would be different. Also on the medicated feed, Yesterday we went to the Feed Mill and got a great mix, which they have in Medicated as well, which I did not get, because well that is my choice, I am not too fond of the medicated feeds. But we did get the ingredients on both the medicated and non medicated. The active ingredient on this one is Decoquinate 27.24 and the instruction says to give it to them for atleast 28 days during the periods of exposure or when experience indicated Cocci. Please remember though, this is a preventative method and will not treat the syptoms if you have it already.

So as I said, the Albon is quite expensive, I order my sulfa drugs for Cocci prevention from the jeffers catalog. Usually takes about a week to 10 days to get to you. pipeline.com is also another place, you can order from. I got the Sulfadimexthoxxine or "Dimethox" which comes in a powder form in pouches. I mix with the proper amount of water, and put them in a turkey baster or a suringe and feed it to them by mouth for the 5 days.

The mix for the packets of the Dimethox is as follows:
Take a quart size jar, empty contents of the powder in the jar and add 1 cup of boiled or sterilized water. Shake like crazy becuase it will take a while for it to mix.

Give each goat 7cc per 100 lbs on the first day and 3.5cc's per 100 lbs day 2 thru 5. If the goats weigh about 25 lbs or so, and are being bottle fed, just give each kid 2cc's mixed w/their milk on the first day and 1cc mixed w/their milk on day 2 thru 5. Oh also the taste of the Dimethox is nothing like the Albon, which they will love the taste of that..so if your goats won't take it..add some karo syrup to it.

Also make sure they stay hydrated. gatoraide or sugar water in a bottle if they will take it, or use a turkey baster or anything you can get liquids down their throat with. Don't wait on this..believe me I am here to tell you..Also keep us up on your progress..
