Hi Cindy,

I wouldn't give up on the little guy yet. Alot of people are of the opinion that this may be a selenium problem - it could very well be that and the pneumonia as well with the fluid you are describing.

I think at this point what I would do is keep an eye on the temperature and administer 15cc's of Nutri-Drench every 4 hours in lieu of the BO-SE you can't get yet. Also, when you do get a hold of a vet that will prescribe some BO-SE, I'd get either some Naxcel or Nufluor (for the pneumonia) and some Banamine (for pain) if needed. These are good to have on hand anyway. I can't remember which now - Nufluor I believe comes in two parts. Once you mix them together, it only remains good for a week unless you freeze it.

The banamine will act as a pain reliever AND help reduce fever if he has one. I would only administer it once though because from what I've read, it is harsh on the kidneys and leaves a residue that can damage the goat later.

While quite a few goats in this condition don't make it, quite a few of them do make it. It really is a labor of love and keeping the goat propped up, hydrated, warm, and fed with enough nutrients as well as medicating right. The Naxcel and Nufluor are very good.

Also, you mentioned in one of your posts that you are providing mineral blocks for your goats. I don't want to criticize you for this because I know you are having a pretty rough time as it is, but you may want to switch to a loose mineral instead in the future. I'm sure that isn't what caused this situation you are having but I just thought I'd mention it as a helpful tip - much easier on the goats teeth as opposed to a block.

Well, please keep us posted - hopefully he will pull through and he'll be that much more special.

Oh, one thing I keep meaning to ask, is he grinding his teeth at all?

Best regards,

Gary Pfalzbot
