Hi Nancy,

It sounds to me like you've got a case of "herd-queen-itis" on your hands here. I'm sure all the others can tell you that this happens all the time. The behavior probably is never likely to change between these two goats until a third (and bigger or more agressive doe) is brought into the picture. Even then there are no guarantees.

We've got two herd queen wannabees right now. They are both big and horned. When they go at it, it's like the clash of the titans. They frequently exchange herd queenship between them but around kidding time, one will try to steal the others kids each time.

Oh sure, there are a few other does in our happy herd of goats that tried to be herd queens (and once were), but these two does came into the picture and the deposed queens now know they are down a notch in the pecking order. Actually, it's funny to watch this in action. The timid goat when placed with an even smaller and more timid goat will suddenly display aggression. More funny than that is that when it gets cold at night after all the battles of the day have been fought, go to the goat pen and you'll see them all huddled together like the best of friends.

Anyone else have any experience with herd queens like this?

Best regards,

Gary Pfalzbot
