Hi Helene,
I'm glad to hear that Billy Jack is doing much better. You'll probably have read my other post before you read this one, so I'll give you an idea maybe. When fall rolls around and those acorns (and leaves) are dropping like crazy, I rake the majority of them up into a big pile and have a leave burning party. Most of the acorns will pop like popcorn especially if you use an accelerator like dried kindling in the pile, kerosine, gasoline or even used motor oil. I know it's a pain to rake up alot of acorns, but it may be worth it.
To tell you the truth, a couple of years ago I was raking up the acorns and saving them in old feed bags for use as a feed in the winter. Never seemed to have any problems with goats dying in the winter. I'm not sure I'll be doing that again though after reading up on them.
One down side I did see to feeding acorns though was that they always seemed to have a worm hole or two in them. These worms probably got passed on to the goats. Not sure what kind of worm it is exactly (I'll find out), but I do know that here in Missouri, the Conservation Dept. had some warning about a worm or virus that has been killing off alot of oaks. They had something like this with walnut trees a few years back as well.
