kitty litter update-any other new stuff

Posted by Mary on October 12, 2001 at 07:32:04:

About six weeks ago, I decided to experiment with kitty litter. I put a layer (about 2 in) down under the pine shavings. I was getting tired of spending 8-10 dollars a bag on PDZ, barn fresh, barn clean...all those products. The results so far have been great! Nice absorbancy, no odor, big cut down on the dust, and saving me alot of money. I get the unscented natural kitty litter from (I hate to say it Gary) WalMart for 2 dollars for a 25 lb bag. Those checkers at WalMart are probably thinking-man this lady has alot of cats. Another new thing I am trying now, is using chopped up cardboard in place of the pine shavings....I'm still on my first bag...so no conclusions yet. Anybody else tried the cardboard? Also another new thing I just read about, something called Chaffhaye. It is a new feed that is very high quality alfalfa hay that is chopped up and misted with molasses before being sealed in airtight plastic bags. The hay will stay fresh for two years or more. It has very high total digestible nutrients, is a total feed (no grain or other feed is needed), and there isn't the waste that you get with hay..supposedly the goats love the stuff, and eat every bit of it. I read an article about it in The Goat Magazine. Has anyone out there tried it yet? Seems it's only available in the south western states right now, as it is new to the market. If it ever reaches upstate NY, I think I'd love to give it a try. Just think-no more wasted hay to haul away (smile). Take Care
