we use shavings or straw. Winters I put down a thick layer of shavings then top off w/the straw. Try not to use hay as when it gets wet it ferments causing heat, this can be enough to burn an animal or if it gets hot and compacted it can burn the barn down. For the old goats I use a sweatshirt just cut the sleeves off at about six inches depending on the size of the goat. Save the sleeves fold them in 1/2 cut a slit on either side of the fold about 2" (depending on the kid size) Now cut a half oval out of the bottom of the sleeve. Longer oval for boys shorter for girls. For added stability on longer coats cut a small slit near the tail area on both sides and again by the flank area on both sides. Tie a piece of string or twin to the top holes (string should be about 1" longer than distance from top hole to bottom hole) Tie other end of string to ski snap or small hook of your preferance. Hook onto hole by flank. I use this for very young animals that I feel need extra coverage the hooks keep the coat from slipping. They look alot like horse blankets. When you need to wash them you can just snip off the twine and toss in the washer.
