Hi Lori... Hopefully, your vet gave you Bio-Mycin...the non-sting version of the oxytetracyline...it is intended to be an IM (deep muscle) injection...if you saw blood, you did hit a vein, which would also make it more painful for the goat. It also may depend on where on the body you're giving it, and how large a needle was used. I always give IM injections from the rear of the goat into the INSIDE of the upper thigh...just parallel to the vulva area ... where there's some meaty tissue and small vessels. I generally use a 20 or 22 ga x 1/2" or 3/4" needle, and always aspirate, or pull back the plunger just a tad before injecting to see if blood fills the syringe..so I know that I'm not in a vein. Never give any injection from the side into the thigh or thurl muscle, since that's where a very large sciatic nerve is located, and could easily cause paralysis/nerve damage.
On the soremouth...yes, it is contagious to humans...it's called "Orf" when humans contract it. Where gloves and wash thoroughly. Your other goats will likely get it if it is indeed soremouth (only way to know for sure is to culture it)...but regardless it should run it's course without too much suffering. Hope that helps you a bit... :)patty
