Misc.rural newsgroup recommended I post here for the most knowledgable advice, so I'll cut and paste what I posted this a.m.
there
We lost one of our prized nubian nannys yesterday. The best milker we
had. We are at a loss as to what happened. She was only three years
old. The day before she was fine but over not much more than a 24 hour
period she was gone.Wednesday afternoon my wife went to feed and she was laying down, she
was fine that morning. We got her up and moved her into the barn. She
had gotten fat and the buck had gotten in a few months earlier for a
day and was due to kid in a month (if she was pregnant). She started
moaning and it seemed she was going into labor. My wife check on her
through out the night and no change. I checked her before going to
work Thursday morning and she was down but still was nibbling at some
feed. Later that morning my wife called and said she wasn't doing well
and we needed to get her to our vet. We had her there within the hour
and he couldn't determine for sure if she was pregnant or not and
wanted to do some bloodwork. His initial thought was pregnancy ketotis
(or something like that). He took the blood sample and we rushed it to
our local hospital. Later that morning he called and said it wasn't
good and that she had gone into kidney failure. An hour later and she
was gone. Poisening is the only thing that we think of but the vet
said he didn't think so.
Has anyone got any ideas what could have taken her down so quickly?
Thanks in advance,
David
