I also castrate when I disbudd. -well, ok, I've chickened out the past 2 years due to not having the tools and let the vet do it but its easier to get all the yuckie stuff (disbudding, castration, tattooing) done in one shot.
Castrating the calves never bothered me a bit, but when its a little kid in your lap sometimes you cringe the first few times. I remember my first disbudding I shook like a leaf - before and after.
Anyway - I've banded, and crimped before. Personally, I feel that banding is easy and almost painless(when done young) crimping is best done when "numb." Even nowadays you can band larger animals (with a big bander like the E-Z-E one) just takes the big boys a little more time to recover. Just be sure you have both! :-)
