I am relatively new (OK very new!) to goats but have done show dogs for years. I promised myself when I got into goats I would not make the same mistakes I made with the dogs but I did. In large part because I went into goats thinking I would do one thing and I have now changed my mind (woman's prerogative)
I went to my second goat show over the weekend. We watched all morning then went and did other things until mid afternoon and went back to the barns. People were very relaxed (y'all sleep in the barns!-but then I guess hotels don't allow goats in the rooms)and were SO helpful. One lady spent an hour with me and showed me, hands-on, three generations of does, their faults and the breeding/selections she made to correct them. I know that what she showed me will influence me forever! (she is also a ADGA judge)This was two day show so the first afternoon everyone was hanging out and more than happy to talk about their goats.
The other thing is get a program and make LOTS of notes. If you like someones goats (even if they aren't the big winners) it may be worth talking to them further. Remember any given show is just one judge's opinion so just because someone didn't win today doesn't mean they don't have quality stock.
Vicki's point about finding a mentor is vital-you need someone with vision greater than your own (tunnel vision)when you first start out. A good mentor will not put down everyone else's animals (they may have some harsh comments about some people but if they don't like anyone's stock but their own steer clear)they will guide you, but allow you to make your own decisions (without punishing you for it)and eventually they will become one of your best friends (or some of your best friends-you may have many mentors as you go on your way).
