Goat shows are a great place to meet area goat breeders, and see some of the best examples of the breeds in competition. There are different classes for the different breeds and ages. They are judged on conformation, and how well they represent the breed standard, or ideal goat.

Venders have lots of goodies there, but are usually a bit more expensive then most feed stores, or catalogs. Kinda the theory of being at a show and "you need it.. we've got it.. for a price :-)" although sometimes one or two items are cheaper then shipping - like hoof shears.

At these goat shows, or fairs people usually have a few for sale. However after learning the hard way for a few years, its better to do a little research, talk to a few breeders and make a few farm visits before jumping into bringing that cute kid home right from the show. (especially if you're new to this)

Also, you're going to want to start off with good stock from the get go, and nice clean stock - free from disease. Demand testing for common problems, and try to have an experienced friend help you select the goat. A good breeder will be able to show you sires and dams of the goat you want to purchase, and should be willing to sit down with quite a few cups of coffee to go over production records, show records and just basics. When I went to get my first breeding buck from New York (quite a trip for me) I had a whole afternoon of chatting, I still keep in touch by e-mail and had plenty of help at the National show from the same breeder!

Have fun at your show - be sure to ask lots of questions and you should get lots of answers! and remember - keep that checkbook at home until you're ready to make a decision :-)
