Hello Madelyn,
I thought I was the only one up at 1:30 in the morning but I guess not :-). To answer the question about the articles, there are really a couple of reasons why I don't reprint newspaper articles. One reason pertains to a copyright issue and the other pertains to a money issue.
For the most part it is illegal to reprint an article that appears in a syndicated newspaper or that is part of a large holding - in particular if it explicitly states a copyright and disclaimer. The LA Times, The New York Times, The Seattle paper, etc. I inquired about reprinting an article out of the New York paper a year or so ago and was told that to do so, I would have to pay a fee somewhere around $1,000 for one article! That took care of that.
There are some newspapers that will allow reprinting of articles, columns, etc, but these are mainly smaller hometown papers and even some of them will charge a fee. I can only imagine what they will do if they catch you in a copyright infringement act.
I'm not sure which "sites" you are referring to that use newspaper articles but I know there are a few that do. I'm not sure what arrangements they have made with the newspapers but I'm fairly certain that they are probably not paying the copyright fee for using the article(s).
It's easy to overlook, really it is because alot of us forward articles we see in the paper or on the Internet to friends, lists, groups, Message Forums, etc. and sometimes this is okay, sometimes it is not. If it has a copyright line on it - it usually is illegal to do so, especially if it is being used in conjunction with a commercial entity. I hope that makes sense to you.
The bottom line is that while I could say sure, I'll go ahead and not worry about the copyright issues and just reprint the articles at will, I know in the back of my mind that it is wrong and if you're like me, you get away with very little. Things like that can come back and bite you when you least expect it. Just like music and MP3's, printed, written works are the property of the creator and have legal guidelines regarding their use in a public forum without consent of the creator.
Best regards,
Gary Pfalzbot
