I think the best teacher in shearing any kind of fiber animal, is a sheapard. Are there any sheep farms nearby, 4-H clubs, or University with animal science majors?
I was scared to death clipping my first ewe, especially with those gigantic, sharp-toothed shears. There is a neat shearing pattern that we use for shearing sheep - not sure if its teh same with goats.
With the sheep - we cast them and follow a step by step pattern - and following it pervents cuts to you and the animal and the different holds strech the skin taut so you avoid those gashes that scare the living poop out of you!
The best thing is have someone show you how, and attend a shearing clinic if you can.
Best of Luck with the furry ones
