I just learned to trim hooves from our breeder who's also been a goat show judge. She showed me how to do a better job. I was being WAY too conservative with how much I was taking off. I understand now that as long as you only go down to LIGHT pink that it isn't painful (I hated trimming the heel- "It's not right- that's got to hurt!" I thought...
That little bit of nudging (mentoring) really helped and the goats hooves looked great by show time last Tuesday.
PS Did my children do okay in their show classes?
Yup! We came home with three Grand Champ ribbons and two reserve champ ribbons. Only class we couldn't show in was the dairy doe (milkers). Our doelings were just too young yet.
