I would have stayed with the exenell, actually we use Naxcel, but you will have to give it for alot more than just 5 days. Joint/navel ill takes very aggressive treatment to finally kill it, including rubbing the joints with DMSO. Which you must be very careful with, since anything on your skin or the goats will penetrate into the joint also. The Banamine initially took the fever down and the swelling, she then had a lowered temp and was more mobile, but the infection persisted. Immediate relief again with the Exenel just not used at a high enough dosage or for long enough. Banamine can not be continued passed the 6th day. Dexamenthazone can be used as an anti-inflamitory, but equally as bad, and needs to be given full dose for 3 days max then tapered down to half dose for 3 additional days only. Joint and navel ill is so hard to treat without taping the joint to find out which of the many types of bacteria you are dealing with that unless the animal is valuable it is cost prohibitive, and Goat Medicine doesn't even give instructions for guessing what to use. Navel and joint ill is usually caused in infants from the inadequate consumption of colostrum, and colostrum from older does is so important when young moms are having kids. Hope everyone has read Joyce's excellent article on colostrum: saanendoah.com

Your vet will have to give your much more aggressive drugs to help this kid survive. If this is a valubale animal I would have your vet speak or email Dr. Joan Bowen or Dr. Rowe V Wade at UC Davis for insturctions, especially on taping the knee for identification of the bacteria, and other ideas on meds.
