The penicillin is a good idea, make sure you are giving him enough 3cc per 50 pounds, under the skin, and I would give it twice a day, for 7 to 10 days. As long as the redness is gone by day 2 or 3 you can give the shots once a day. Do not quit the shots to early though. You have to be very careful only giving a tetanus toxoid shot when you castrate, it takes quite a while for the shot to take effect, and my vet insists that it isn't until the next shot is given as a booster at 21 days. So unless the dam is also vaccinated before she kids, give some tetanus antitoxin at the same time, that way you won't have to worry about tetanus and this wound. If you missed his second booster at 21 days, than I would run not walk to the feed store and give him 1/3 of the bottle of the tetanus antitoxin, it comes in a 1500 unit vial. Vicki
