Lynn, often it is simply a matter of preference for the owner. Most goats over time will adjust to and eat either testured (loose) feed or pelleted feed unless there is simply something in it that tastes bad or smells bad. Most "well balanced" pelleted feeds will have the same basic ingredients as loose feed, just very finely ground. However, most pelleted feeds made by major feed manufacturers are made using "least cost formulation" meaning the ingredients may literally change in the middle of a production run. Vicki has on numerous occasions discussed making your own feed. This is well and good if you have a well balanced proven formula and a ready source of a good vitamin and mineral premix to add to the feed as well as the other additives goats need(ammonium chloride, a good coccidiastat etc). It sometimes take a bit of extra time to mix up a batch but well worth it if you know you have a good feed in the end.
