Goat People Rule!
While foraging through the forum it came to me (for the 4000th time) how great this place is. We ask questions about the health of our herds, how to maintain or improve their health or how to help an animal that is sick and there's always someone out there to help with their experience. We can tell funny stories or cry on each other's shoulders. Sometimes this is the only place we can share those things with others who understand.
From this forum I have learned how better to worm my girls (and boys! Can't leave them out!) and they are better for it. I've learned about hooves and rumens and preg checks and pizzles and you name it. There were times this kidding season when I had questions and someone always helped either here on the forum or (bless 'em) the chat room would fly in with suggestions! With one particular birth it was something I'd read here on this forum that helped save the kid. Most recently, because of Mary's question regarding coccidia, I realized what was wrong with my babies. They had been on a prevention schedule but once weaned they hadn't had anything else. I'd read in a book that if the babies were fed medicated feed and then got sick they would be harder to treat. That will change next year. Everything I had to go on said there would be bloody diarrhea. I spent time every day searching through poop to determine it's make-up! Well, nobody here had any of that. Just a few skinny, scruffy kids that everyone else was outgrowing by leaps and bounds. I tried all kinds of things to help them but they just couldn't seem to pull out of it. I started everyone on the place (incl. the grown does and bucks) on coccidia treatment because of what I read here. And you know what? It needed to be done. I lost one wether before I learned what was happening but since beginning the treatment, everyone is perking up and appetites have greatly improved! I only hope the little ones haven't had too much damage to their intestines. I'm tired of saying "I'm sorry" and it isn't enough anyway. If anyone knows of something to do to help them, I welcome the advice. As for prevention, do I need to put the grown animals on a prevention schedule? I'd appreciate some input on that. I know they're supposed to build up an immunity, but....
There aren't any "goat mentors" around here and most of what I've learned up to now has been trial and error. To think I said I'd never have a computer in the house! This thing has paid for itself and all I've ever learned to do is send email and come to this forum! I can't even make it do a spreadsheet! But, I will keep this machine as long as this forum exists! I don't get enough good email to warrant keeping it just for that!
So, for all of you who start your posts with "this may sound stupid"....hey, thanks. I learned a lot and saved a bunch of kids when I didn't even know I had the problem. Your question just may be the answer someone else is looking for! Thanks everyone.
