I raise my goats seprated from their moms at birth. They live in age groups. Infants, kids, then everyone young is then called a yearling, once they move into the milk room they are called milkers, and since they get more than 1/2 their grain on the milk stand daily, it is easy to make sure they are getting enough food.

My girl friend bottles all her kids but....she keeps them all in with Mom. The kids live in a cattle panel square in the large barn. The mom can sniff, lick, and lay with her kids, but they can not nurse. The kids are bottled from birth, the Mom milked, 3 days later, she puts them all back together. The Mom takes care of the kids, makes sure nobody picks on them, and they follow her to eat, but when they see Kenny they come running for bottles! So she still has bottle friendly tame kids, which are also on CAE prevention (the only way we can sell stock in our area) yet her goats all live in a big family group.

And yes in my situation I do have Mom's who are very upset they have no kids, but they also bond with me more since I milk them daily. I have does who I know think I am their baby the way they lick and call to me. Some does will really raise a rukus, other does couldn't care less. I am probably the least patient person you will ever meet. I simply don't like dam raised kids and the fact that they do not come to me. I do not keep does I have to chase down, or who do not act perfectly on the milk stand. So....dam raising is simply not an option for me. I have raised my kids on mom for 24 hours, put them into a kid pen, and had them nurse their dams 3 times a day on the milk stand. This was a good alternative for me when I had lots of goats. Tame kids, no bottles, and I had complete control of milk. Vicki
