I saw all the posts and couldnt' resist. I've found that one of the breeds that I've come to enjoy as both a brush goat, and a companion is the Oberhasli.

The reason I like them is that they are uniquely colored: a rich bay with black highlights. They really arn't a common breed as when you go to the local fairs you'd be lucky to see one or two of them. My two Oberhasli Wethers and Buck live outside in a huge briar lot and love to clear out brush. (the two wethers also drive as a team) While the Oberhasli may not be the top producer, and maybe can't get high appraisal scores, I love the sweet, calm personality.

My word of advice... in my experience.. as much as I love my Toggenburgs... I wouldn't advise one for a beginner. (Unless you really want to hate doing chores everyday). My first one had the biggest attitude, and her daughter carries the same "spunk" too. Don't get me wrong, I love em to death, and I'm sure there are hundreds of nice ones out there... Just beware that those nice beige and white markings come at a cost :-)

If you can, get in touch with a few different breeders in your area and visit the different breeds.

Personally, I couldn't put up with the annoying voice of a roman nosed Nubian sorry guys :-p (no offence, really!) and I really do like ears (sorry Lamanchas).

Just a side little story for all you lamancha lovers out there:

A year ago at a large fair in CT, I was sitting by my pens and overhead a conversation of fellow goat breeders... they had a herd of nice Lamanchas. Anyway, I guess they got sick and tired of explaining that the goats were naturially earless and in a misunderstanding someone actuially believed that they cut the ears off at birth and fried them up in a meal. Lol.. Needles to say, we had a visit from the local SPCA just to make sure that everyone was alright at the show. LOL.. Just goes to show you the wonders of people..

Good Luck having a breed choose YOU!
