Nat-As ususal Vicki has terrific advice. I will add to that. I started out in purebred show dogs (still have some) I did what many newbies do and got over-dogged very fast, before I really knew what I was doing.I finally realized that not only was I not making any money but I was not having any fun and I went from 14 dogs down to 4 in 5 months.
I will do the same with the goats. I also have not believed in giving Mother Nature too much help. I do not try to save weak babies and I don't rebreed or keep poor mothers. It's amazing how much people can spend on trying to fight these fights and the resulting animals usually keep giving you expensive problems. I have found a good market for goat soap actually have a bigger demand than I can keep up with and selling milk to other dog people (who are trying to keep those weak puppies alive!)So my milk girls earn their keep.
Just like the stock market -if you have a good eye for stock, buy low sell high.
I have also gone to not using any bedding in the summer. We have cement barn floors which I sanitise and swep out every morning. The girls seem to prefer the cool floor and I have less problem with flies etc.
