Milk Pail Blues
I've just got to build myself a milking stand because it is getting ridiculous the way I am having to milk this unruly LaMancha of mine. I don't know why this goat is so skiddish but she has taken to laying down on me now. I give her a good helping of grain too. She gladly accepts it but goes down on her front feet and as soon as I touch her udder she starts moving around - this morning she actually put a foot in the milk pail.
So you are probably asking, "why don't you put the grain up higher so she doesn't go to her knees in front?" Well, I tried that too and she hunches down on her back legs. I finally got her milked and I feel bad for it but it was the only way I could seem to do it - I lifted one of her back legs and held it while the other hand did the milking. Of course she put up a fight but not as much.
One thing I noticed too about this goat and maybe some of you can tell me about your experiences with this: after the "fight" to get her milked, I decided I was going to give the milk a try. I strained it, refrigerated it and then poured myself a nice tall glass. I really thought it would have that "goaty" taste like some of the other goats milk I've tried - no way. This tasted richer and almost like whole cow milk. No goat taste to it at all. I always thought goat milk had that definite goat taste but boy was I surprised. No wonder those little kids fight for a drink.
Best regards,
Gary Pfalzbot
