Hi Gary, unless you have a severe distaste for them, you really ought to think about getting into LaMancha's. Not only does the cross with a good quality LaMancha buck immediatly improve just about anything, but with the herd books open (obviously you don't register any off spring from meat animals you have) can be graded up to purebred. Alpines are notorius for being mean to other breeds. LaMancha's can hold their own with all other stock, milk more over the much longer lactation than any other breed, and coming from some Nubian ancestory we had LaMancha's with as high of butterfat and milk solids as our Nubains. The only thing Nubians are better about is the cash they make hands down, more than any other breed of goat. 99% of the folks looking to buy a goat want a Nubian, so having any lesser breed puts you behind in sales of stock. LaMancha's are quieter, easier on equipment, don't find pleasure in trying to dismantle the barn like Nubians and eat less and produce more milk. Yes my Nubians have very impressive milk yeilds in the beginning of lactation, and will milk 10 months, if you count 5 to 6 pounds during the middle of summer milking :) But LaMancha's want to milk, heat, cold etc. I would in a heart beat have all LaMancha's (well, I couldn't get rid of 11 year old Poptart......or Amber.....or Cookie :) but if I was independantly wealthy and could have goats just to show and love, I would have LaMancha's. But living in Texas, Nubians are the money makers, especially for export. My daughter Joni very successfully raised Lamancha's for 10 years, dispersed them this last year for college money. With the dispersal now of my girl friends herd, our area is completely LaMancha-less. Well except the two yearlings of hers I am selling. Vicki
