You need a milking stand. You don't have to buy a $300 one-my husband built one out of scrap wood using the specifications given in a catalog. He also drilled holes on the stand so that any spilt milk drains through and the doe is not stepping on it, nor does it splat on the milker (I, too, had more milk outside the bucket the first few times). The first thing I learned was to place the stand against the wall-that leaves the doe only one place to go, and I gently put my shoulder against her side when she moved around-that also helped me feel when she was about to shift her weight, and I got pretty adept at pulling that pail close to me if I sensed she was about to "dance".
We were both "newbies", and once she understood the routine with gentle guidance we both survived the experience.I don't give her all her grain at once, so that she doesn't "shovel" it on the floor- and she reminds me to put more in by moving away from me towards the wall and squeezing her legs together(I can live with thatcompromise, and have done so for 5 years-and she has trained my friend to do the same when I am away from home).
I often babysit for my neighbor's does who come over and stay with our herd when she has to go on a trip. One of hers was a monster initially when it came to milking, but with her gentle prompts and a consistent routine, she is wonderful now,
too!
Be patient-she doesn't know the routine yet, and will come to love it and jump on the stand to get her grain if she realizes that you have made it a pleasant experience. (I milk her once a day, but feed twice a day--always on the milking stand!)
