I don't know how anyone survives with goats without a milk stand. I use mine for almost everything I do from milking to hoof trimming, giving meds and sometimes bathing. Sure saves the back. I have never had a doe to lay down when I was trying to milk. From the first time I milk a first freshener I try to let them know I will not tolerate unacceptable behavior, not to say that they never step in a pail. I will not tie feet or have someone stand on the other side to help keep them on the stand. One of my stands has slots on either side I can slip an L shaped rail in to prevent one from stepping off one side of the stand. I feed while I am milking but if one is misbehaving the feed is taken away and we start over with gentle handling and if she won't stand still I get a little rough, sometimes I pull an ear, not an option for you, and look her in the eye and loudly say NO and try again and I will do this over and over till she gives in. You need to look her in the eye as this is a control factor. I sometimes pinch on the inside of the leg, very tender there, when I feel her start to shift weight and ready to lift a leg to kick. Any time I feel a weight shift I loudly say NO and sometimes a mild swat to that leg. Milking sometimes takes a while at first but much more plesant for the long haul. I give the feed back when she stands still for me to milk a few squirts. They get the reward message pretty quickly most of the time. I milk with my head in the flank on beginners so I can feel the slightest shift of weight and push with my head to make her bear weight on that off side leg as that seems to be the one they kick with first.
