It's painful no matter what the age. I would on an older buck like this get some banamine from the vet to give. I have previously written about the castration my vet did on a yearling buck, he was much larger than 80 pounds though. She simply crimped the sack, slicked it open across the bottem, pulled out the testicles, scraped the cords, then once the blood stooped, cut off the entire sack and tissue. She then about 5 minutes later let go of the crimping tool. It sprayed blood, then dripped blood, then coagulated, as she continued to spray it with Furox for about 45 seconds. He was fine, didn't miss meal, the only care we gave him was vaccination and spraying the wound with Furox. Whatever you are going to do do it now! Fly season is horrid for procedures like this. And yes if you can squeeze the testicles through the bands, even if it is only one at a time, you can use the bands on him. Spray the band with an antiseptic spray each weekend, to check for wound infection and to check that the band didn't break. Do not use fly spray directly on the wound, and I am not a fan of Swat, the ointment with the fly spray in it! It debreeds the wound and causes the surrounding tissue to loose its hair and become irritated. Vicki
