I don't think its ever too late to castrate. Burdizos (the big hevay duty crushers) I'm sure would be very painful for the big boy - you'd need a vet to give him some kind of painkiller I'd immagine. The bucks can be such whiners.
At work, we castrate older calves, and sometimes a yearling bull with this extra large bander called the "E-Z-E Bander" (Nasco has it, but its a bit pricey) Pretty easy to use and the large size was not a problem. Only some discomfort, but you're going to get some anyway. Just be sure to give them a teatnus shot before hand. If you have a neighboring dairy or beef farmer they might have one hanging around - and could help you out.

Worse comes worst, you can always have the vet come out and they would most likely "pull em out" and let the wound drain. Its a little gruesome to watch, but they heal up ok. Just not advisable to use the slice and dice method during the summer.
