I was always told that by 4 months, they should be seperated. It depends on the breed - some mature slower then others, and everyone has a different opinion based on trial and error.
I think the key is really to watch his behavior, if he starts acting really bucky - off to his new home. As long as he can see his girls, he should be fine. Also, have you ever thought to get him maybe a pet wether as a buddy? My lone buck has a wether buddy that stays with him year round. No more lonesome, lovestruck buck and they get along pretty well.
Its great having a buck in the herd. I found it 100% easier to spot my girls in heat and no more midnight van or truck rides getting to that buck 1/2 way across the state :-)
Good luck!
