Grass clippings/ tie outs

My husband has decided not to fence the back pasture this summer (long story,BIG fight)....at any rate. I'd like the girls to have fresh grass/weeds and we have lots of it. Can I give them grass clippings form the mower bag? Do I need to be careful if they get old? How old is old?

Also can I stake a few of them in an area? What do I use to stake them?I know not to leave them without supervision while they are tied out,but anything else I should be concerned with?
