Hi everyone,

Okay I've got a question/observation here...

Over the last couple of months, I've been reading some different posts and information about using Cydectin pour on for cattle as a wormer - orally on goats. I've read where some people recommend 1 cc per 25 pound of goat and I've also read where some people recommend 1 cc per 35 pound of goat. I'm more inclined to use it 1 cc per 25 pounds because this is what most people have reported as the effective dosage. I too have noticed less worms in fecal counts at that rate.

But the topic that seems to be surfacing recently is use of Cydectin on pregnant does within the last month of their pregnancy. Apparently there have been a few cases of people reporting their does suddenly aborting from this.

I don't know if any of you remember our pregnant doe Pepper. She suddenly seemed to be aborting and as I began to look at our goat health log AND read the reports on Cydectin, I suddenly realized that this may have been the cause of her troubles. I had given her 5 cc's of Cydectin orally three days before the trouble began. She did not abort per se (found no fetus, afterbirth or anything but blood), but her vaginal area swelled and protruded, and she started dropping a bit of blood for a few days. We originally thought that this may have been a prolapse but it wasn't. Needless to say, we had a vet at the ready just in case. And as a follow up on Pepper, she is doing fine and has no apparent problems thus far.

So I'm curious to hear what some of you have experienced with using Cydectin, the dosages you are using and if you have had the same reaction as did Pepper.

I remember that about the same time we started GoatWorld people were talking about copper levels in goats. At that time if I remember correctly, the "normally accepted and agreed upon level" of copper was 5 to 7 ppm in feed. Well since then, there has been some definite "rethinking" of copper levels in goats and I believe that the accepted and agreed upon level is somewhere around 100 ppm. This just shows you how useful it is for us all to discuss any type of wormers, vitamins, minerals, feed supplements, etc. we give our goats. (You may comment on the copper portion of this post too if you wish).

Best regards,

Gary Pfalzbot
