First I am not a vet, but this is how I use both of these drugs on my herd, also, this year both my Tylan 50, tylan 200 and my penicillin will be throwen away unopened, when my new drug shipment comes in next week, so we use very little in the way of antibiotic on our place, though I do seem to use it alot in my helping of other folks. Though I have given penicillin for wounds before they have become infected, on a whole I don't give any antibiotics unless I have a fever. In a down goat, I may give an antibiotic to help prevent pnemonia from setting in.
Penicillin 300,000 units, I give 3cc per 50 pounds under the skin, for 5 to 7 days, depending upon the problem. I use this for wounds, mastitis mostly, infections after birth.
Tylan 200, is my drug of choice for upper respiratory, pnemonia, foot rot, 6cc per 100 pounds given under the skin for 3 days. Tylan 50 I use for pnemonia in kids, or rattles in kids, when they inhale birth fluids at 6cc per 25 pounds, under the skin, for 3 days, but only give newborns one shot, 1/2cc, works like a charm.
Very obviously if I have a very sick goat, and haven't caught the pnemonia, I would use a vet perscribed dosage of Naxcel, but we have had great results with Tylan. Vicki
