Okay, I am curious if anyone else is noting strange behaviors this breeding season.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have a Saanen doe who came into heat on Sept. 29th. She was only 5-1/2 to 6 months old at the time, so I simply marked the day on my calendar so I could begin plotting her cycles. The buck I have is her half-brother, so my intention was to take her to another buck to have her bred. Naturally, she mooned around by the buck's pen, but as far as I could tell, the two never actually consumated their relationship.
Well, time passed....and passed....and passed, and she never came back into heat. The only conclusion I could come to was that he had somehow managed to breed her through the fence!
I was frustrated at this prospect. I know a lot of breeders do line-breed, but I was hoping to add some new blood to my herd. This was really an unpleasant development.
Well, this morning I went out to feed and who is mooning around by the buck pen again? You guessed it! Unfortunately, I can't take her to be bred today because my dear hubby has the car with my daughter's car seat in it! And since no one can watch her for me while I make the 2 hour trip to the buck, I am stuck with a lovesick doe who may not come back into heat again until January! UGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!! Cabrito anyone? (Ha! Ha! Just kidding!)
