EAST KROC — Mallory Pribyl and Becky Hrabik have found a way to share their love of animals with a wide audience.

Since May 2001 these best friends/neighbors have put out The Pet Press, a newsletter that offers stories about animals and tips on caring for pets.

The money they raise is used to purchase items to care for those animals being kept at the Bay Area Humane Society & Animal Shelter Inc. in Green Bay.

“We have feature stories, word searches, Internet sites, classified ads and information we learn about pets. Anything you can imagine,” said Pribyl, a freshman at Kewaunee High School. “When it started, we would mail it to friends and our pen pals. And they'd contact us and say ‘Can I get a copy for my friend?’ “

They recently brought $65 worth of leashes and collars and toys to the Bay Area Humane. By bringing these items to the shelter they made sure that none of their donation was used in euthanasia.

“We are so animal crazy,” Pribyl confesses. “We both love horseback riding. And when we were young we would do our reports on animals. And we would dress our kittens up in doll clothes.”

And they have plenty of pets.

Between them there are horses and dogs and cats and fish and rabbits and pygmy goats.

“We recently got a grayish, brown Holland lop rabbit we’ve named Floppy, and he’s our mascot,” added Hrabik, who is an eighth-grader at Kewaunee Grade School.

The girls are putting the finishing touches on their September-October issue. It will feature a 9/11 tribute to a courageous dog named Daisy.

“God made these wonderful animals and we should treat them how we would like to be treated,” Pribyl said.
