Hi folks,
I received a request from a film company that is doing a documentary on a Scotsman named Alexander Selkirk, an 18th century mariner who was stranded on Juan Fernandez Island off the coast of Chile. Basically what he wants to know is what kind of goats were on that island with Selkirk. He describes them only as "goats were brown with short curved horns".
From the research I've done on this, I found that Juan Fernandez himself brought a few goats to the island on his first visit and left them behind to multiply. Then of course I've read that a couple of centuries later, they are trying to eradicate these "feral" goats because of the destruction to the plant life they have caused. No where can I find reference to the actual breed of goat.
Considering the "original" goats came from Spain, I would presume them to be of Spanish origin. But of course, there are variations on Spanish goats.
The film company (called Cinenova out of Toronto) wants to film some scenes of re-enactment - there may be a curtain call for anyone having brown goats with short curved horns! You don't know how excited I get when I'm watching TV and see a program with a goat or two in the background. Maybe we can get a few of our goats in the background - even if I have to get a few cans of brown shoe polish LOL.
If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on this, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Gary
