Doe kidded 1 month ago, and still looks pregnant!

Posted by Deborah on May 25, 2001 at 16:22:59:

I have a nigerian dwarf that gave birth about a month ago. She usually has two or three, but only gave birth to a female this time. Well, she still looks very much pregnant. I was wandering if someone has had a situation like this? Do they sometimes have kids this far apart, or am I crazy? She acts just fine, except she is nursing her baby kid and an older kid she had last year!

GW response: A situation like this isn't all that uncommon and there are a number of factors that determine the outcome. There isn't really anything that will determine the number of kids in the normal kidding though goats are prone to have multiple births on average more than a single kidding. It has been postulated that condition (health, feed, climate) may or may not be directly affecting of the number of kids in a kidding. Regarding her still looking pregnant, in some cases goats that haven't been wormed, or the wormer that is/has been used has become ineffective - goats can and will develop a pot belly look that is most commonly caused by worms. Also, in some cases goats that have previously given multiple births will carry a large appearance about them for some time well after kidding. The older kid she had is just taking advantage of her being "in milk" and it can be a detriment in some respects (the new kid may not be getting an adequate amount of milk. The older kid was not properly weaned.
