Hello,
I live in downeast Maine and have a small herd of goats. I just finished reading the paper and it had horror stories of Mad Cow, Hoof and Mouth and rabies. I know that it is very easy to get hysterical about the whole situation, but I find being informed a good sorce of protection..
My question is a bit strange, but please be patient. I own a bed & breakfast and we have a lot of visiters form Europe. I have one particular artist that raises sheep in England. I have always allowed people access to my goats, but now I am really thinking carefully.
The US has not had a outbreak of Hoof and Mouth since the 192? quoted in the paper. They are even talking about the possibility of not showing livestock at the agricultural fairs. Just for the precaution. How can I protect my herd without seeming like I am being hysterical?
I will have a bleach solution in a shallow pan to step in before entering the barn. There are no animals around my farm, other than an occasional moose or deer. Mad cow is a concern if your feed had animal products in it.I do not go to auctions or deal with meat buyers.
What else can be done?
Thanks, Kathy Johnson
