Yes it is very contagious, and not much truly can be done for it. A lot like pinkeye. The scabs that will form on his mouth, ears, hinny and does udders, will fall off and enfect the pen. The goal in soremouth is not to catch it yourself while doctoring, and to keep the site moist so that he is comfortable eating and drinking. If the dam gets it really bad on her udder/teats she may not let the kids nurse. We just spray the area with Avon skin so soft and water in a small water bottle. This way I don't have to touch it. You can also scrub the area with betadine and place an ointment on the area, but whatever you do choose to do, wear gloves, and just like pinkeye it will run its course, in 2weeks or so. I go about it a little differently, I want them (if someone has it) to all have it and get it over with! Once they have it they rarely ever have it again, unless you bring in new stock who has a different strain. It's just another one of those ugly little problems that ALL goat breeders get that nobody wants to talk about! You have a great day! Vicki
