: Lots of missinformation out there. I would kill for some nice grass hay with alfalfa in it! If you can find hay like this or nice alfalfa you can limit your grain feeding drastically. Alfalfa is a superior feed for goats. The problem comes from the extra calcium legume hay has in it compared from that of regular grass hay. And if you do have a mineral inbalance it can lead to the formation of stones, along with the higher protein from good alfalfa hay. 99% of the urinary calculi problems come from the overfeeding of protein, and in wethers. Having said that I do not feed my Nubain Bucks straight alfalfa hay, mostly because it is a waste. They simply don't need this quality of hay. Does do not have any problems from calculi. I sort of talked myself around in a circle didn't I :) Your grass/alfalfa hay is fine and isn't going to cause any problems, if you are worried at all simply add ammonium chloride to your males diet. Vicki, Thanks for the info about alfalfa, but where do I find ammoniun chloride to purchase? I have a wether I am paticulary fond of and would not like him to develop stones.
