I recieved the following email, can anyone tell me what may have happened? Note that the baby was over 3 hrs old and that the cord had been dipped in 7% iodine and was not too long. Although I keep dental floss with my kidding supplies, I have never had to use it. Would think if it was going to bleed it would do so right after birth.
We had a crisis with a newborn yesterday, the doe kidded around
1:00p.m., everything went fine,we don't let the babies nurse, we heat
treat the colostrom and bottle feed, so I did all that stuff, she
consumed about 8 oz. in the first 3 hrs. and went to sleep.I noticed that
there was a coupl of small drops of blood on the towel she was laying on,
but nothing alarming( I had already treated the cord with iodine at birth
and saw nothing unusual) Went outside to do chores and milk and when I
came back in she was laying in a BIG puddle of blood screaming. My husband
was getting home about that time-Thank God-and determined that she was
bleeding from the cord, so he tied it off to stop the bleeding. For the
next 3hrs. we tried to get her to drink, keep her body temp up- and
finally tubed her 'cause she wasn't or couldn't swallow. She expired last
night right after I talked to Jan, but I did want to see if you have ever
heard of anything like this-I should probally add that the umbibical cord
,although normal at birth had swollen considerabally when she started
bleeding. We have been doing the goat thing for 3 yrs now, and although I
have much to learn,I'm not a total novice and this really shook me up
