Dear Joy: Black oil sunseeds are good for more than just the coat. They contain vitamins A, D and E, and fiber, so they also help eyes, joints and digestion. Any raw sunseeds will help, but the oil sunseeds do the best job. All my goats, regardless of breed, get 1/4 cup of sunseeds per 1 cup of feed.
On baking soda, any brand you buy still comes from Arm & Hammer, so the cheaper the better. Give it free choice. They may go several days without eating any, and then eat a bunch of it all of a sudden. That's okay. They will eat it when they need it. The baking soda helps to neutralize the bitter oils that accumulate in the tissues of the cheeks, from eating plants and weeds. It also helps to relieve gas. Occasionally a small bit of feed will stick in the stomach lining, and if it doesn't move along, it will ferment. The baking soda neutralizes the fermentation, rendering the stalled bit of feed harmless.
We use a divided container, mounted just high enough so the goats have to stretch a bit to get into it. One half of the container has loose minerals, and the baking soda is on the other side. I've found that Jeffers sells the divided containers cheaper than the others (under $3), and they aren't big enough for the goats to stand in, and putting them up a little keeps them from leaving deposits, if you know what I mean.
