Jeanette,
We have a female Great Pyrenees that we put in with out goats when she was between 3 and 6 months old. I'm not really sure exactly how old she was because we had obtained her when we were purchasing some goats.
At first we left her out of the goat pen and slowly introduced her to the idea of being in with the goats. She did well at first but I noticed one morning that she was "playing" with one of the new born kids. Soft mouthing it was her way of playing with it, but certainly the kid did not think it was playing. So we immediately took her out.
After that first introduction to our goats, we left her in the pen while watching her and out of the pen while we were inside the house. Eventually she learned - especially after a few of the bigger goats butted her rather hard.
Now she pretty much leaves the goats alone and spends quite a bit of time in and out of the pen unsupervised. So to answer your question - it sounds like your dog is already showing some affection towards the goats. This is a good sign. I'd proceed with letting the dog in with the goats but keep a watchful eye out for awhile until both get used to each other.
Best regards,
Gary
