A lump that swells across and under the jaw in a milk fed kid is actually normal. Especially if they have Nubian ancestory. All our kids carry these until they are weaned, bucklings (and if you don't know what that is go to our new terminology page :) grow out of this much later than the does. Now in older kids and stock and usually not till later spring out here a swelling that is firm is usually bottle jaw and a sign of worms. It takes a good dose and maybe a couple of doses to get rid of this. A hard swelling in a new kid can be a salivary cyst where saliva actaully is pooling in an area it is not supposed to because of a hole in the duct. This would only occur in kids who are related since it is genetic. Kids are simply to young to have lumps from CL yet. Iodine diffeciency can also cause lumps, which will easily go away if you spray 7% iodine under the tails of the goats, and make sure your stock minerals contain a good amount of iodine, or put out iodized salt. Thats all I can think of right now. Vicki
