This is what works for us. First, make sure that your milking habits are clean, clean clean!!! Strain milk thru several layers of cheese cloth or filters made especially for the job, and pasturize on top of the stove by bringing milk up to 165 degrees ( dairy thermometers are great, but candy thermometers work o.k.) and then cool quickly by setting your pot of milk in a sink of ice water. I used to just put the milk in the fridge, but it seems to taste better when it's been cooled more rapidly. 'Course, lots of folks drink it raw, also, but I figure if I'm gonna go to all the trouble of pasturizing for the kids, I probally ought to do it for my youngins, too.
